Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, is more than just a dental issue—it’s a serious health concern. As the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, it doesn’t stop there; it can also lead to severe health complications that go well beyond your mouth. Seeing a dentist for gum disease means taking care of your overall well-being!
Gum disease starts with gum inflammation (gingivitis) and can progress into severe periodontal disease.
Infections can damage the bone and tissues that hold your teeth in place, making them loose and, eventually, may require removal.
Additionally, the infection can spread from your mouth to other parts of your body.
Gum disease can cause oral inflammation, which happens when your immune system reacts to an infection. Without proper periodontal care, this inflammation can spread to other parts of your body, including important organs.
Lack of periodontal care can also raise the risk of cancer and has been linked to premature births.
Nearly a third of Aussie adults have gum disease – you know, periodontitis – and it’s a real sheila of a problem, especially as you get older.
It all starts with plaque, that sticky stuff that builds up on your teeth. It’s chockers with bacteria that produce acids that attack your teeth, gums, and the bone that holds your teeth in. This can cause some serious damage.
And when your body tries to fight back, it causes your gums to get all red and swollen. That’s where a dentist for gum disease can help.
Gum disease in its early stages is usually sorted out with antibiotics and a good clean at the dentist.
If it gets worse, you might need a more serious deep clean, what we call scaling and root planing. In the terrible cases of periodontitis, surgery could be on the cards, maybe even bone or tissue grafts.
Think you might have periodontal disease? Don’t wait! Schedule a check-up at Significant Smiles today. Early detection prevents complications and boosts your chances of a healthy smile—no invasive surgery needed!
