Severe or persistent toothache, a broken, cracked or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, a dental abscess or facial swelling, or bleeding that won’t stop are all reasons to be seen quickly. If you’re unsure, call and describe it, we’ll advise whether you need urgent care. If you have severe swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, treat it as a medical emergency and call 000.

Pick it up by the crown (the top), not the root, and gently rinse it if it’s dirty. If you can, place it back in the socket; if not, keep it in milk or held inside your cheek, don’t let it dry out. Then call us immediately, as acting within the first hour gives the best chance of saving it.

While you wait for your appointment, an over-the-counter pain reliever you’d normally take can help, and a cold compress against your cheek can ease swelling.
