Emergency fillings

Dental fillings usually last several years, and you can wait for a routine appointment to replace one. However, in some cases a problem filling can require urgent dental treatment.

You may need an emergency filling in circumstances such as:

Oral injury resulting from a blow to the face.
Weakening of the seal that bonds the filling to the tooth.
Further severe decay of the tooth.
Excessive pressure from teeth grinding or clenching, or chewing very hard foods.

If you have a filling that’s fallen out or broken, your emergency dentist can likely save the tooth by placing a new temporary or permanent filling to repair the exposed cavity.

What to do before your emergency filling

Your dentist may be able to reuse a dislodged filling, so make sure you save it and take it to your emergency appointment. Unlike a knocked-out tooth, a dislodged filling doesn’t need to be kept in milk to preserve it – just wash it and keep it safe.

You also need to keep the affected area in your mouth clean to help prevent infection.

Whether a filling has fallen out or become damaged, steps you can take to help ease pain and swelling ahead of your emergency dental appointment include:

Taking anti-inflammatory medication like aspirin or ibuprofen.
Putting clove oil on the exposed cavity.
Applying a cold compress or ice pack to your face.

Why you need a replacement filling?

Dental fillings prevent further decay in a tooth and provide a barrier against bacteria.

With a dislodged or otherwise defective filling, your tooth loses this protection. This can result in deep infection and a dental abscess – a serious threat to your general health if infection spreads.

But there is some good news.

Replacing a filling is typically simpler than the procedure to place the original filling.

And, if you had an old amalgam (silver) filling, you can have it replaced with a composite (white) filling – a better aesthetic option, especially in the more visible areas of the mouth.

Call our friendly team and they will help you arrange an appointment. We are available 4 days per week, from 8.00 am to 5pm. On Friday we are open from 8 – 12pm.

We know it can be a daunting process, so we make sure we guide you through every step of the way and make you feel as comfortable as can be. Our team is trained to help you feel at ease from the moment you arrive in our practice, additionally we also offer various means of sedation

Our Treatments

Do I require anaesthesia?

The reason we numb your mouth as part of the filling process is that we must use a small drill to remove decayed tissue from inside the tooth. Without anaesthesia, you may feel some twinges of discomfort while that is happening.

What should I do after getting fillings?

It is best to avoid any hard, chewy, or sticky foods after a dental filling for up to two weeks. If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity you may also benefit from avoiding hot or cold drinks and foods. There is no need to wait to brush your teeth after a dental filling.

How long do I have to wait until I can eat?

A composite filling hardens immediately once a dentist puts a blue UV light on your tooth. You can usually eat as soon as you leave your dentist’s office. However, your dentist may recommend waiting for at least 2 hours before chewing on the filling if you’re still numb.

I have to say that Dr. Zohal is simply wonderful. I definitely recommend her. My husband has needle issues and anxiety and she was just amazing. Kind, patient and she has a special way of calming people down. Another thing I loved is that she explains everything in detail about what will be done and why and during the procedure she tells us what she is doing at each step, giving us incredible confidence.
